By chance, Kembra Pfahler rang the buzzer at 222 Bowery one night during our open hours. Since then, she visits us often. An enduring artist and legendary denizen of the Lower East Side, Kembra is the foremost practitioner of availabism, a performance philosophy she invented, which celebrates the abundance of what’s at hand.
Kembra conceives of an evening of performances she calls Dove Day Afternoon. Organized with the poet Jeanne Graff, it is meant to be a revolutionary celebration of words, dance, and music.

Kembra decorates the space and creates an atmosphere for the night. Jeanne reads a short story involving their long-standing artistic collaboration. Juliana Huxtable, a dominant positive force in the global landscape, reads poems. Tap dancer Joseph Lesher-Liao performs an electronically-modulated routine on his own floor. Singer Ev Christensen, new to NYC by way of North Dakota, graces us with two numbers. The evening concludes with a live performance by Kembra's band, The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black.
The unflinching desire to change the world is this new work's essence.
Organized with Eli Coplan.

Kembra Pfahler was born in Hermosa Beach, CA. After studying with Mary Heilmann and Lorraine O'Grady at the School of Visual Arts, she grew to become a key figure of New York’s underground scene. With a practice spanning music, performance, acting, film and visual arts, the image vocabulary she has built since the 1980s informs the countercultural aesthetics of Lower East Side.
19 year old artist Ev Christensen began her music project on the rural North Dakota farm where she was raised. Moving to New York after turning 18 years old, she quickly saw the opposite lifestyle of her quaint upbringing. This whiplash greatly influences the music Ev is releasing now—lyrically, as a sort of human study, and sonically, as a juxtaposition of sound creates an image that feels both ancient and modernized at the same time.
Jeanne Graff was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, and lives in New York. Total Freedom, her second novel, was recently published by Semiotext(e), after Vzshhzz in 2018. In 2014, Graff founded 186f Kepler, an art space without walls. She has organized numerous exhibitions in the United States, in Europe, and in China.

Juliana Huxtable is an artist, writer, and musician living in New York. She has held solo exhibitions at Reena Spaulings, New York, Project Native Informant, London, and performed at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her forthcoming poetry collection will be published by Wonder, which published her debut collection of texts, Mucus In my Pineal Gland, in 2017. She co-wrote Life: A Novel with Hannah Black.
Joseph Lesher-Liao is a New York City performer, filmmaker, and artist whose work integrates movement, writing, and video. Though he works across many disciplines, his roots are primarily as a tap dancer, through which he explores the active collision between sound and the body. Joe trained under tap dancer Ivery Wheeler in the lineage of the The Four Step Brothers.
The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black is Kembra's band. Its members include Gyda Gash, Eric Robel, and Samoa. TVHKB is currently recording a new album and celebrating their 35th anniversary.
This project is supported in part by Alcone Makeup, Dano's Dangerous Tequila, and Joyfully Waiting.
