About the role:
The Shop Manager oversees The Bookcase, a bookshop/recordshop with an inventory entirely selected by artists, poets, and musicians inside our space at 222 Bowery.
They are responsible for managing the shop's inventory, including the purchasing and selling of books and records, packing and mailing online orders, promoting The Bookcase on social media, organizing intimate gatherings, readings, and other events related to the inventory, and providing administrative support as needed.
This position reports to the GPS Programming Manager.

They are responsible for managing the shop's inventory, including the purchasing and selling of books and records, packing and mailing online orders, promoting The Bookcase on social media, organizing intimate gatherings, readings, and other events related to the inventory, and providing administrative support as needed.
This position reports to the GPS Programming Manager.
This is an onsite position and is ideal for someone interested in the crossroads of art, music, and poetry, and who is looking to gain experience in an arts nonprofit and in the broader publishing and book/record distribution field.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Host the weekly 222 Tuesdays open houses on Tuesday evenings from 4-7pm
- Manage all inventory of The Bookcase: develop systems for buying, selling, organizing, and tracking incoming and outgoing books and records, report sales to GPS’s accountant
- Gain extensive knowledge of 222 Bowery / GPS history: greet visitors, give tours, and discuss upcoming and past programming with visitors
- Manage GPS’s online Shopify store, pack and mail out online orders
- Organize intimate gatherings, readings, signings, and other small, casual performative encounters on Tuesday evenings related to materials on display
- Creatively promote materials from The Bookcase (social media and other)
- Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the physical space in 222 Bowery
- Help strategize the future distribution of new GPS Records
- Assist Archivist and Registrar with the transcription of Dial-A-Poem recordings

Skills + Experience:
- Strong interest in printed matter, especially pertaining to art, poetry, and music
- Familiarity with inventory management, Google Suites, and Shopify
- Ability to be flexible and work with minimal direct supervision
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with close attention to detail
- Comfortable working in a small team
- Willingness to learn from mistakes, curiosity, integrity, and a good sense of humor
- Some arts and culture nonprofit experience preferred
- Some experience working in bookshop/recordshop retail preferred
- Willingness to work evenings
