Giorno Poetry Systems has a long history of benefit concerts. We continue that tradition with Meredith Monk and Anne Waldman cohosting an evening of performances, food, and drinks to benefit GPS continued programming. They perform and invite some very special guests to perform as well. Full line-up to be announced soon.
What’s special here is seeing live performances by cultural icons in the intimate context of a historic NYC loft.
All funds support GPS’s “Treat a Stranger Grants,” where a jury of artists, poets, and musicians give unrestricted grants to other artists, poets, and musicians to support housing, health, immigration, legal costs, childcare, and other basic needs.
What’s special here is seeing live performances by cultural icons in the intimate context of a historic NYC loft.

Gathering places for artists and the avant-garde, so central to the history of downtown New York, are becoming increasingly rare. Artists first moved into 222 Bowery in 1958; Giorno founded GPS in 1965; Burroughs moved into the Bunker in 1974; and GPS made it into a public venue in 2023.

In 1975 and 1976, benefits for Dudjom Rinpoche included performances by John Giorno, William Burroughs, Philip Glass, Les Levine, Joan Jonas, John Cage, Jackie Curtis, Robert Wilson, Charlemagne Palestine, Taylor Mead, Patti Smith, and Meredith Monk, among others.
In 1987 and 1994, several benefits for the AIDS Treatment Project featured Laurie Anderson, Hüsker Dü, Debbie Harry, Sonic Youth, David Johansen, Karen Finley, Eileen Myles, Kembra Pfahler, Bob Holman, Penny Arcade, and John Waters, among others.
